BRAZILIAN SOCIETY OF SOIL SCIENCE

The Brazilian Society of Soil Science (SBCS) was founded 60 years ago to unite people and organizations interested in the promotion and development of Soil Science in Brazil. The organization is based in Viçosa, state of Minas Gerais, at the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, an important institution of education and research in agrarian sciences. The SBCS has assembled a group of 800 society members, consisting of professors and researchers from all over Brazil

Brazilian Journal of Soil Science

For the last 30 years the SBCS has been publishing the Brazilian Journal of Soil Science. The bimonthly publication contains about 40 papers, rigorously selected and corrected by peer reviewers.

The Brazilian Journal of Soil Science (RBCS) is indexed by ISI, an index of current contents and science citation. Currently, the impact factor ranks the RBCS first among soil science journals published in languages other than English.

Besides the journal, the SBCS maintains an Information Bulletin and a website with information and didactic material addressing issues of interest for soil science.

Publications

Every two years, the SBCS publishes a novel edition of “Topics of Soil Science”, a series of text books to update knowledge and feature innovations and pioneering papers in Soil Science, which have also contributed to a continuous formation of students and researchers.

Since the foundation in the 1940s, the SBCS organizes specific events and periodical meetings for information exchange among members and for the presentation and divulgation of technical and scientific studies in Soil Science.

A critical endeavor of the SBCS has been the organization of the Classification System of Brazilian Soils, with the establishment of an appropriate and uniform nomenclature and of soil analysis, study and representation methods.

            Supporting agribusiness -

The researcher and professor members of the Brazilian Society of Soil Science have formed highly qualified human resources for work and research in all sectors of agribusiness.

The research and technological development in soil science have contributed to an extraordinary advance of the Brazilian economy in which the agribusiness accounts for 33% of the gross national product. Every year the exportation rates of products are on the rise, owing to a staggering increase in the output of food and biofuels.

The headway made in science from the 1960s onwards made the agricultural utilization of over 10 million hectares of Cerrado possible.  While the area under agricultural use increased by 24 %, the output of the main agricultural products increased by 125 %. The yield gains allowed to save immense areas of natural ecosystems for preservation.

Several universities and research centers feature solutions for sustainable growth by creating, adapting and transferring technologies for the benefit of the country. Brazil has a dense network of federal and state research institutions, with state-of-the-art centers in the different regions of the country, where cutting-edge and pioneer technologies in tropical environments are being developed.

The SBCS is pleased to contribute to the success of agribusiness in the Brazilian economy and will always strive for the divulgation and circulation of knowledge related to soil science.
